ENT London offers a wide variety of procedures for the diagnosis of head and neck problems, which includes laryngoscopy, pharyngo-oesophagoscopy and biopsies of neck masses. Laryngoscopy comes from the Greek words ‘larynx’ meaning throat, and ‘scopia’ meaning to see. It refers to a medical procedure that is used to obtain a view of the vocal folds and the glottis, located in the interior of the throat. This medical procedure may be used to determine if a patient requires head and neck surgery, as well as during various neck surgery procedures.
During head and neck surgery, laryngoscopy is usually performed for procedures on the larynx, procedures on other parts of the upper tracheobronchial tree, and to facilitate tracheal intubation during general anaesthesia or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Below is a general outline of the procedure usually followed during laryngoscopy:
• The patient is made to lie on their back.
• The laryngoscope is placed in the mouth in such a way, that the tongue is moved out of the line of sight of the ear, nose and throat surgeon.
• Depending on the type of blade used, the laryngoscope is inserted either anterior or posterior into the epiglottis, and lifted so that the ENT surgeon is able to view the glottis, clearly.
Laryngoscopy usually causes some discomfort, and is generally not performed on conscious patients, or patients with an intact gag reflex. Modern ENT clinics are generally equipped with a range of different types of laryngoscopes, with each having a specialised use during neck surgery.
If your ENT doctor has advised head and neck surgery for the treatment of a recurring throat problem, it is important to consult with a highly experienced ear, nose and throat surgeon, who will provide you a detailed explanation of what the neck surgery will involve. It is vital for patients to discuss the potential risks, complications and benefits of head and neck surgery thoroughly with their ENT surgeon, so that they can make an informed decision on whether to proceed with the procedure.
