A vocal granuloma is a benign non-cancerous growth, which can sometimes cause voice disorders. They usually result from irritation or trauma to the vocal fold, and are generally found at the back of the vocal fold, on top of the vocal process cartilage. As there is not much soft tissue for cushioning, they are prone to trauma from an impact with the vocal process of the other vocal fold, when they touch each other during speaking, singing, coughing or even clearing the throat.
A common symptom of voice granulomas is a sensation of something stuck in the throat, which most people try to clear by coughing or clearing their throat. However, such actions can only worsen the irritation that caused the granuloma, and further compound the voice disorder. This often results in a cycle of irritation and formation of more granulomas, which require the attention of an experienced ear, nose and throat doctor.
Patients with voice granulomas usually suffer from a range of voice problems, some of which are mentioned below:
• A breathy hoarseness.
• Difficulty in raising the volume of the voice.
• Intermittent voice breaks.
• Sharp pain while coughing, throat clearing and swallowing.
If you are suffering from any of the above voice problems, for more than a couple of weeks, you could consult with an ear, nose and throat doctor. ENT doctors are doctors who specialise in diagnosing and treating problems of the ears, nose and throat, such as voice disorders. During the consultation stage, the ENT doctor will conduct an in depth assessment, before advising you about various options to treat the voice problem.
In most cases, treatment for voice disorders caused by vocal granulomas include changes in diet, anti-acid medication and voice therapy. Most vocal granulomas will shrink and eventually vanish with proper medicines and behavioural changes. Surgery may be suggested only in rare cases, such as when a granuloma is very large, and may take a long time to resolve with medicines.
