Risks of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common types of cosmetic surgery in the UK, with around 4,000 procedures being performed annually. To ensure a successful outcome, it is important that it be performed by a specially trained surgeon, such as a cosmetic surgeon or an appropriately qualified ENT surgeon. Most British ENT surgeons prefer to perform rhinoplasty under general anaesthetia, though it can also be sometimes performed under local anaesthesia.

If rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia, the patient may be advised an overnight stay at the hospital. Rhinoplasty should not be painful, and most patients only require mild painkillers to control post-nose surgery discomfort. After rhinoplasty, a firm splint will be placed over the nose, to hold the bones in their correct position. For the first few days, dressings may be placed in each nostril, which may result in a patient being unable to breathe through the nose.

Post-Surgery Risks

Just like other surgeries that are performed under general anaesthesia, there is a small risk of chest infections, especially among those patients who are smokers. Such infections are known to complicate surgeries; hence, patients should ensure that they are free from colds, coughs and sore throats, prior to their nose surgery. If a patient has any doubts about their health on the date of their rhinoplasty, they should contact their ENT surgeon, immediately.

It is quite common for patients to experience difficulty while breathing through the nose, during the first week after surgery. This should disappear as the swelling within the nose settles down. In some cases, a patient may experience heavy nose bleeds shortly after the nose surgery, which may require treatment in hospital.

Sometimes, a patient may feel that their nose still does not look right after all the swelling fully subsides. In such cases, the ENT surgeon may suggest a second nose surgery to correct the problem, if he or she determines that the problem is genuine. Most ENT surgeons usually advise patients to wait for a year after the first nose surgery, before performing revision rhinoplasty.
