Rhinoplasty Techniques For Modification Of The Nasal Tip

If you are thinking of undergoing nose surgery to improve the appearance of your nose, you’re not alone. The popularity of rhinoplasty, both here in London as well as the rest of the UK, is on the rise. This cosmetic surgery, which can be performed either by an appropriately trained ENT surgeon or cosmetic surgeon, is known to significantly enhance a person’s facial appearance.

Nose surgery can help treat a variety of problems such as nose injuries, bulbous tips, deformities, bumps on the bridge, breathing problems, small noses and much more. One of the most common requests of patients considering rhinoplasty is modification of the nasal tip. Below are some common techniques used by ENT surgeons to refine the tip of the nose:

• Suture techniques: Sutures can be a reliable yet cautious way to alter the shape of the nasal tip. They are typically used to refine a bulbous tip, or to elevate a droopy nose. As this technique does not involve removal of tissue, it is generally considered to be a relatively safe rhinoplasty technique.

• Cephalic resection: Commonly used to refine a bulbous tip, this rhinoplasty technique involves removal of a portion of the cartilage on the tip, to make the nose narrower. This technique is generally not recommended for patients with thin, soft or weak cartilage in their nose.

• Tip grafts: This technique is usually used to lengthen the nose, increase the projection of the nose, or create further refinements to the tip. It involves the use of cartilage grafts, ideally taken from the nasal septum of the patient undergoing nose surgery. Tip grafts are also commonly used in revision rhinoplasty.

• Strut: An ENT surgeon often uses a ‘strut’ to provide additional support to the nasal tip, or to lift the tip slightly. Struts are rectangular pieces of cartilage that are usually placed between the cartilages in the nasal tip during nose surgery, to give it extra strength.

• Base resection: This rhinoplasty technique is generally used to make a nose that is too wide at the base, narrower. It involves the removal of a section of the nostril at the bottom of the nose, on both the right and left sides.
