Rhinoplasty can be used to enhance the appearance of ones nose, as well as improve its function. Compared to other types of cosmetic surgery, rhinoplasty can be quite challenging to perform because of the complex anatomy of the nose and the high skill required for modifying it. Hence, nose surgery should only be performed by a qualified nose surgeon, such as an appropriately trained ENT surgeon.
Just like other types of surgery, there is also a small risk of complications developing after rhinoplasty. In cases where such complications do develop, the ENT surgeon may advise further treatment, which may even include a second nose surgery.
Below are some early complications that could potentially develop after nose surgery:
• Infection of the wound: It is usually treated with antibiotics and draining.
• Loosening of stitches: Could result in bleeding and haematomas.
• Contact dermatitis: Sometimes develops in sensitive patients.
• Necrosis or the death of tissue: It needs to be removed or infection may arise.
• Discomfort and swelling: It generally subsides over a period of time.
• Nose blockage and inability to smell: It usually fades away be itself, after certain rehabilitation measures are followed.
• Heart failure: Though very rare, this may sometimes occur in patients with heart problems, as breathing becomes limited after undergoing rhinoplasty.
• Brain damage: Although very rare, this may happen when a wound infection transfers to the body. It is characterised by long lasting headaches, sudden epilepsy or fever.
• Endocarditis: This condition results in the inflammation of the heart valves.
• Total sepsis: Though this rarely occurs, it can present a dangerous situation for the patient. It is caused by the presence of a bacterial toxin in the blood, which may lead to toxic shock syndrome. The symptoms of this problem usually occur soon after nose surgery, especially in patients with weak immune systems.
• Leakage of cerebrospinal fluid: This may happen if a patient has suffered from previous traumas or infections.
