According to the British Association of Aesthetic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery in the United Kingdom. Commonly also referred to as a nose job or nose reshaping surgery, rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure through which the appearance of the nose can be enhanced. It can be performed either by a cosmetic surgeon, or an appropriately trained ENT surgeon.
ENT surgeons who specialise in rhinoplasty need to consider the aesthetics of a patient’s ethnic group before sculpting their nose, so that a natural look is maintained. Below are some of most frequently requested procedures by patients of different ethnic origins:
Asian origin: Patients of Asian origin frequently request for nose surgery to improve the projection of the nasal tip, raise the bridge or make the nose appear narrower. In most cases they are advised augmentation rhinoplasty, through which the size of their nose is increased by using natural tissue or implants.
African origin: These patients typically possess noses with a low nasal bridge and a wide tip. Hence most commonly, patients of African origin chose to have aesthetic nose surgery to reduce the width of the sides of the nose, which often involves implants to elevate the dorsum.
Hispanic origin: Patients of Hispanic origin usually choose rhinoplasty to correct the hump on the bridge of their nose, and elevate the tip. This can generally be done through reduction rhinoplasty, during which the cartilage is removed and reshaped to give the nose a more attractive appearance.
Mediterranean origin: This includes patients of Jewish, Greek and Arabic descent. Rhinoplasty to reduce the ‘hooked’ appearance of the nose caused by a prominent dorsal hump and drooping tip is common amongst patients of Mediterranean origin. In such cases, nose surgery usually involves narrowing the nose bridge and raising the nasal tip.
Most ENT surgeons prefer to perform open surgery on patients of non-Caucasian origin, because physical features can often make the nose surgery more demanding in such cases.
