Rhinoplasty – Different Ethnic Requirements

Rhinoplasty is the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery in the United Kingdom, with thousands of individuals undergoing it annually. While most rhinoplasty procedures are requested for aesthetic reasons, they may also be advised for functional or reconstructive purposes. Rhinoplasty performed to enhance the appearance of the nose is commonly referred to as a nose job or nose reshaping surgery. Due to the complex anatomical structure of the nose, it is important that such nose surgery only be performed by a trained nose surgeon, such as an appropriately qualified ENT surgeon.

While planning a rhinoplasty procedure, ENT surgeons need to consider the aesthetics of a patient’s ethnic group to ensure that a natural look is maintained. Below are some common modification requests made by patients of different ethnic origins:

• Asian origin: The noses of patients of Asian origin are characterised by thick skin, low nasal bridges, bulbous tips and wide bases. Such patients usually request rhinoplasty to enhance the projection of the nasal tip, raise the height of the bridge or make the nose narrower. Nose surgery to accomplish this usually requires augmentation techniques, such as the use of natural tissue or implants, to increase the size of the nose.

• African origin: Patients of African origin typically possess noses with abundant fibrofatty tissue, short nasal bones, bulbous tips and flaring nostrils. They usually request for aesthetic nose surgery to decrease the size of their nostrils, reduce the width of their nose, or make their noses smaller.

• Hispanic origin: The noses of patients of Hispanic origin are characterised by abundant sebaceous glands, nasal humps and under projected tips. They generally ask for rhinoplasty to remove the hump on their nasal bridge, or increase the projection of the tip. This is usually achieved through reduction rhinoplasty, during which the bone and cartilage is re-shaped to improve appearance.

• Mediterranean origin: This ethnic group consists of patients belonging to Jewish, Arabic and Greek descent. They usually request for nose surgery to reduce the ‘hooked’ appearance of their nose, arising from a prominent dorsal hump and drooping tip.
