Rhinoplasty – After The Procedure

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly requested forms of cosmetic surgery in the United Kingdom. A majority of British cosmetic and ENT surgeons prefer to perform rhinoplasty under general anaesthesia, for which the patient may be advised an overnight hospital stay. Patients usually require nothing other than mild painkillers to control post-surgery discomfort, and are generally surprised at the relative painlessness of the nose surgery.

Post-rhinoplasty, the patient can feel a bit uncomfortable for a few days, because of the dressings placed within each nostril. In most cases, the ENT surgeon will also place a firm splint over the nose, to hold the bones together and ensure that the new nose retains its given shape. The patient is usually provided with detailed after-care instructions about what needs to be done when they get home, which they should make sure are correctly followed.

Below is an outline of some after-care instructions, generally given by ENT surgeons:

• Expect to have minor bleeding from the nose for the first few days after nose surgery. When this occurs, gently dab the blood away using small gauze squares, or a clean handkerchief.

• Keep the head elevated, as much as possible.

• Steer clear of having hot baths.

• Never blow the nose.

• Try not to sneeze though the nose. If you feel a sneeze coming through, try coughing it out.

• After the bandages have been removed from the nostrils, the patient can choose to clear their nose by inhaling into the back of the throat.

• Unless advised otherwise, it is better to leave any crusts that form in the nose, untouched.

The splint over the nose is expected to be removed about one or two weeks after rhinoplasty. Although, there is no medical reason for a patient to stay away from their normal activities for more than a few days, they will generally feel more comfortable if they avoid any major activity for about two weeks after the nose surgery, until the bruising around the nose disappears.
