Every year, numerous individuals undergo rhinoplasty to enhance the appearance of their nose. Rhinoplasty is considered to be a challenging surgical procedure to perform, owing to the intricate anatomy of the nose, and the skill involved in shaping it. Hence, it should only be performed by a surgeon who has received specialist training, such as a cosmetic surgeon or an appropriately trained ENT surgeon. In fact, nose surgery can have revision rates of around 10 to 15 percent.
What is revision rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty is a second nose surgery, which is performed in situations where the initial procedure did not work out as planned. It is commonly used to correct bumps on the nose, remove scars, or redo an old rhinoplasty that is losing its shape. If you wish to undergo revision rhinoplasty, you should first consult with an ENT surgeon, who will determine if you are suitable for the procedure. The surgeon will assess:
• The aesthetic appearance of the nose, from various angles.
• The visibility of scars from a previous rhinoplasty.
• The type of rhinoplasty procedure that will be needed to correct the particular problem. In some cases, a patient may need several smaller surgeries.
• The patient’s psychological state: An assessment will be made on whether the patient genuinely requires a second nose surgery, based on valid reasons. If the ENT surgeon suspects that a patient is suffering from a psychological issue and doesn’t require further nose surgery, then they will be referred to their General Practitioner, who can consequently arrange for the appropriate help.
Revision rhinoplasty is usually performed either under general anaesthesia or a combination of local anaesthesia and sedation. The time taken to perform the nose surgery varies from patient to patient, and generally takes a few hours to perform. In some cases, it may take longer than the primary rhinoplasty procedure. Both open and closed techniques may be used during the nose surgery, depending on the requirements of the particular case.
