Reduction Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can be performed to modify the shape of the nose, as well as to increase or decrease its size. In some cases, functional problems like breathing difficulties can also be corrected during the same nose surgery. Due to the intricate nature of the nose, rhinoplasty is a technically complex procedure, and should only be performed by a surgeon who has received specialist training, such as an appropriately qualified ENT surgeon.

What does reduction rhinoplasty involve?

Reduction rhinoplasty is a procedure utilised to reduce the size of the nose. During the surgery, the ENT surgeon reduces the size of the nasal framework comprising bone and cartilage, which is covered by skin. The skin is usually left untouched, while the framework of the nose is generally approached from beneath the skin, through tiny incisions made inside the nostrils.

Imagine the nasal frame as the roof of a cottage. First the nasal bridge is carefully trimmed to bring it closer to the face. Then, the two sides of the nose are brought together to create a new bridge-line, by cutting the bone where it merges with the cheek bone. The skin over this framework is allowed to fall back over the new frame. As the skin is elastic, it usually does not need to be modified during nose surgery, in most cases.

The above nose surgery procedure effectively makes the width of the nose narrower. In cases where a patient’s nostrils appear wider after this procedure, a small piece of skin may be removed from the nostril floor, leaving fine scars on either side of the nose. In cases where the nose is required to be shortened or a bulky tip reduced, cartilage is removed from the end of the nose to give it a more aesthetic shape.

Patients with breathing difficulties may also have their breathing corrected during reduction rhinoplasty. This procedure is known as septoplasty, and involves the adjustment of the plate of the bone which separates the two nostrils. Reduction rhinoplasty is usually performed as an out-patient procedure, and can take between one to three hours to perform, depending on the complexity of the case.
