Following your rhinoplasty operation, it’s fair to say that you will not feel at your best. You will have dressing packs on either side of your nose for the first couple of days and you will have to breathe through your mouth. Vaseline or lip balm will be useful in keeping your lips from chapping.
However, the good news is that healing begins very quickly, and you should find that any pain is easily managed by paracetamol or ibuprofen.
There are certain steps that your ear, nose and throat doctors will suggest that you follow in the first few days after your nose surgery, to prevent unwanted damage and protect the results of your rhinoplasty.
Your ENT surgeon will advise you to avoid dusty or smoky atmospheres that are likely to irritate your nose surgery. If you do feel the need to sneeze, you will be advised by your ENT surgeon to blow out through your mouth as much as possible. You are strongly advised not to blow your nose for around two weeks following your rhinoplasty, making do with gentle wiping where possible.
You will suffer from nose bleeds for the first few days, but these should be minor and not last long. If you feel you are experiencing a significant bleed, or the bleeding does not stop after ten to fifteen minutes, you should contact your ear, nose and throat doctor at ENT London immediately.
Your ENT specialist at ENT London should also be contacted if you experience a sudden rise in temperature or if your pain increases significantly, as this could indicate an infection. While such symptoms may be worrying, in most cases, your ENT surgeon at ENT London will be able to treat your infection quickly and easily with antibiotics.
You will naturally feel congested following your rhinoplasty, but your ENT specialist will have explained this in advance and there is no cause for alarm. Your ear, nose and throat doctor at ENT London may prescribe a nasal spray to help relieve these symptoms. You may find it easier to sleep propped up on pillows to easy congestion.
As your recovery progresses, you may wish to return to work, or you may take time off until the bruising and swelling from your nose surgery have disappeared completely. In either case, you should avoid contact sports for around two months following your rhinoplasty.
While these after effects may seem unpleasant, they will soon fade away, leaving you to enjoy the new look from your nose surgery.
