Reasons for Undergoing Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty has rapidly grown in popularity, to become the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery in the United Kingdom. Commonly referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty can be performed by cosmetic surgeons, as well as appropriately trained ENT surgeons. Rhinoplasty can be undergone to correct a variety of functional problems as well as improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose. However before making the decision to proceed with the procedure, it is important that you consult with an experience nose surgeon and give your decision considerable thought.

Aesthetic Rhinoplasty

If you feel self-conscious about the shape or size of your nose, rhinoplasty could potentially address it. One of the aims of aesthetic nose surgery is to ‘harmonise’ the nose, with the rest of the facial features. This means to adjust its shape in relation to the eyes, cheekbones and chin. Below is a list of changes that can be made to the nose through cosmetic nose surgery:

• Size: to make the nose bigger or smaller.

• Length: to make the nose longer or shorter.

• Width: to make the nose wider or narrower.

• Tilt: to modify hooked or turned-up noses.

• Tip: to modify bulbous, pinched or cleft tip noses.

• Symmetry: to straighten crooked or generally asymmetrical noses.

• Angle: to adjust the slope or direction of the nose.

• Shape: to straighten humped noses, or remove bumps and dips.

• Scars: to remove excessive scar tissue, moles or other defects.

• Nostrils: to modify flared or pinched nostrils, or make adjustments to the columnella that separates the two nostrils.

Functional Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can also help correct problems affecting the function of the nose. If a patient suffers from breathing difficulties or snoring problems, an ENT surgeon may recommend nose surgery to widen nasal passages, and alleviate the problem. In addition, rhinoplasty is used to repair broken noses, correct birth defects and treat sinus problems. In cases of extensive tissue damage (due to injuries or tumours), rhinoplasty can also be used to reconstruct entire portions of the nose.
