Preparing for Nose Surgery

Once you have discussed your rhinoplasty with your nose surgeon, and agreed on the best nose surgery options to meet your expectations, your rhinoplasty will be scheduled at ENT London and your ENT surgeon booked in.

Your ENT surgeon may ask you to make some changes prior to your nose surgery, such as trying to stop smoking. This is because smokers are much more prone to wound infections and post-op chest infections that can hamper your recovery.

You will also be asked to inform ENT London if you have a cold or cough in the days immediately before your rhinoplasty. If this is the case, then your nose surgery will need to be rescheduled as the infection risks as simply too high.

Most nose surgery operations are carried out by ENT London under general anaesthetic, and your ENT specialist will tell you how long you need to fast before your operation. This is usually for six hours prior to surgery, or overnight for morning operations. You will also be asked to arrange for someone to escort you home, and stay with you for a while after the rhinoplasty procedure, as you may still feel groggy from the anaesthetic.

Your ENT specialist will usually take around two hours to complete your operation, depending on the type and complexity of your nose surgery. Your ENT specialist will discuss the procedure with you in detail beforehand, so that you know what is in store. You will also meet with your anaethetist prior to surgery as a final check that you are in good health and suitable for the operation.

You will be asked to sign a consent form by your nose surgeon. This is nothing to worry about and is simply a formality to confirm that you understand the surgery you have agreed to, you are aware of the risks and that you consent for your nose surgeon to go ahead with the operation.

You will have your heart rate, temperature and blood pressure checked by a nurse and may have a urine test too, just to confirm that you are in good health for your operation, before you are taken to the operating theatre.

It is not advisable to drink alcohol, drive or operate machinery of any kind following a general anaesthetic, and as discussed, you should have a friend or relative stay with you for at least the first night to take care of you.
