The outcome of rhinoplasty relies, in part, on the proper assessment of the patient’s nasal structure and general health, by the appointed cosmetic or ENT surgeon. The nose consists of an intricate combination of structures, which function together as a whole. A modification to any single part, could affect the functioning of the rest of the nose, hence, it is important for a thorough evaluation of the nose to be conducted, prior to rhinoplasty. During the assessment process, the cosmetic or ENT surgeon may use x-rays and CT scans, as well as 3D imaging technology, to obtain information on the underlying structure of the patient’s nose.
The main goals of a pre-rhinoplasty assessment are:
• Determining if the patient is a suitable candidate for nose surgery.
• Ascertaining that nose surgery is being requested for the right reasons.
• Deciding upon the goals to be achieved through rhinoplasty.
During the assessment stage, the ENT surgeon will thoroughly evaluate the general health of the patient, to determine if they are fit enough to safely undergo and recover from nose surgery. Some medications and medical conditions can increase the risk associated with rhinoplasty. Smokers are generally advised to refrain from smoking prior to rhinoplasty, while pregnant women are advised to postpone nose surgery till after childbirth.
Alongside determining the physical suitability of a patient, the ENT surgeon also needs to assess the patient’s psychological state, to ensure that they are requesting rhinoplasty for the right reasons and have a realistic perspective. It is important for patients to understand that there is no such thing as a ‘perfect’ nose, and the goal of cosmetic rhinoplasty is only to refine the shape of the nose so that it is more aesthetically pleasing.
If a patient is found suitable for surgery, 3D imaging technology and special morphing software’s can be used to simulate the outcome of various rhinoplasty procedures, and define the goals for the nose surgery. All aspects of rhinoplasty, such as risks, benefits and aftercare, will be discussed with the patient in detail. If the patient decides to go ahead with the nose surgery, a suitable treatment plan can then be prepared, together with a break up of the cost of treatment.
