Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

A medical term commonly used for cosmetic nose surgery is rhinoplasty. The procedure should ideally be performed by a qualified ENT surgeon or cosmetic surgeon who has undergone specialist training in nose surgery. Some of the common reasons why people seek rhinoplasty are to have a more aesthetically pleasing nose, improve nasal breathing, or correct an injury. In the open method, the ENT surgeon makes a tiny cut on the bottom of the nose, also called the columella. The skin of the nose is then lifted off the nose to carry out the rhinoplasty. In the closed method, the ENT specialist makes all incisions within the nose.  This ensures that the cuts made by the ENT surgeon are not visible from the outside.

 

An ear, nose and throat surgeon will decide what type of rhinoplasty to use, depending on the requirements of the patient. Usually, the ENT surgeon uses the closed method for people going under the knife for the first time. This is also the most preferred method for patients who want rhinoplasty for cosmetic purposes. If a person requires nose surgery because of an injury or breathing problem, the ENT surgeon will most likely advice on the open method.

 

Before the nose surgery, the ENT surgeon should always discuss the surgery with the patient in depth. This may involve using computer simulations to show the patient what their nose would look like after their rhinoplasty. This provides patients with the facility to check the computer images before suggesting any modifications if they feel this to be necessary. The ENT specialist can then utilise these images to perform the nose surgery and achieve the patient’s desired result as closely as possible.

 

Patients who opt for nose surgery usually need approximately a week to recuperate.  The ear, nose and throat surgeon would most probably take off the bandage or cast, approximately six days after the rhinoplasty. Patients may observe a bit of bruising around the nose area once the cast is removed. However this bruising should disappear by itself after a few weeks.
