Open and Closed Rhinoplasty Procedures
Rhinoplasty or nose surgery typically involves one of two methods of surgery – open or closed procedures. The ENT surgeon usually decides which method to use based upon the needs of the patient. Open Rhinoplasty Procedures
With an open nose surgery procedure, a skilled ENT surgeon carefully makes a tiny incision at the bottom portion of the nose so that he can peel back the skin and conduct the rest of the surgery internally without creating a lot of external scarring. This portion of the nose is the part in between the nostrils and is called the columella. A small scar will occur at the columella or base of the nose.

Typical cases chosen for the open method include those in which a patient is receiving treatment for breathing difficulty or as the result of an injury to the nose. With a closed rhinoplasty procedure, an experienced ENT surgeon chooses to make all of the necessary incisions from the interior of the nose, ensuring that no external scars are created. The closed method avoids unnecessary scarring, which is essential for those patients who elect to have this type of procedure in order to create a more aesthetically pleasing nose.
The closed method of nose surgery is usually chosen when the patient is receiving rhinoplasty for the first time. Most patients who are receiving nose surgery for cosmetic reasons will also undergo the closed method in order to avoid facial scarring.
Recuperation from Rhinoplasty Procedures
The typical time for recuperation is approximately one week. In most cases, the ENT surgeon removes the bandages, and in some cases, the cast, after six full days after the nose surgery procedure. While some bruising may occur, this is perfectly normal. The amount of bruising varies according to the nature of the surgery. Any bruising that does appear usually disappears after several weeks.
