A guide often used by ENT surgeons to check if the nostrils are too wide is to draw an imaginary vertical line from the inner corner of the eye to the outer edge of the nostrils. Ideally, the nostrils should fall within this imaginary vertical line.

 

Generally, patients who have nostrils that are wider than usual require rhinoplasty which involves the use of Weir excisions. Depending on the kind of incision made by the ENT surgeon, the Weir Excision can be used to:

 

• Make the base of the nostrils narrower.

• Decrease the length of the nostril sidewalls.

• Make the nostrils smaller.

 

Once the suitability of a patient for rhinoplasty is determined, digital photography and computer imaging technology can be used to illustrate the likely outcome of the nose surgery to the patient. Depending on the requirement of the patient, the ENT surgeon can then make changes to the images, based on what he or she feels can realistically be achieved.

 

A Weir excision to reduce the size of the nostrils involves the removal of a wedge of tissue at the base of each nostril, from the inside of the nose. Most ENT surgeons prefer to make incisions from the inside of the nostril, rather than the outside, so that there are no visible scars.
