Misconceptions Regarding Rhinoplasty

According to various statistics, rhinoplasty is the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery in the United Kingdom. It has a success rate of around 90 to 95 percent, and is usually considered to be a very safe and effective procedure. Nevertheless, there are a number of myths regarding rhinoplasty, which are often unfortunately believed to be true. Below is a discussion of some of the common misconceptions regarding rhinoplasty.

1. Plastic is used in plastic surgery of the nose: A number of people actually think that a cosmetic or appropriately trained ENT surgeon uses plastic parts to modify the shape of a person’s nose. This is certainly not true. In fact, the word ‘plastic’ in plastic surgery comes from the Greek word ‘plastike’ meaning to mould or shape, and has nothing to do with modern ‘plastic’ in any form.

2. Rhinoplasty enables one to have the same nose as their favourite celebrity: Many people think that rhinoplasty can be used to obtain the exact same nose as their favourite celebrity. This is not entirely possible, and a more realistic goal for rhinoplasty should be to improve the appearance of one’s nose bearing their unique facial features in mind. It is important to have realistic expectation of what nose surgery can achieve, so that unrealistic expectations do not lead to disappointment post surgery.

3. Noses changed through rhinoplasty are very fragile: This is not true, and in most cases patients should be able to continue with their daily lives exactly as before surgery, without the fear that their nose will get damaged.

4. The new nose may melt in the sun: This myth came into existence because some individuals chose to undergo instant nose surgery using candle wax injections, which responded poorly to heat. Today, nose surgeons who perform rhinoplasty generally use only rubberized silicon or biological tissue in nasal implants, which are heat-resistant.

5. Everyone will know if someone has undergone nose surgery: Though it may seem surprising, most people who notice that a patient is looking unusually attractive after rhinoplasty are unable to pinpoint the change to their nose. Additionally, if you visit a highly skilled surgeon, such as an appropriately trained ENT surgeon, he or she will strive to attain a balance between the altered nose and the rest of the facial features, so that a natural appearance is maintained.
