How Successful is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can help one change the shape of their nose. It is also commonly referred to as cosmetic nose surgery or more casually as a 'nose job'. Rhinoplasty can be used to straighten the nose, increase or decrease its size, remove bumps or modify the shape of the tip. It may involve the addition or removal of cartilage or bone around the nasal area, to give the nose a more desirable shape.

Rhinoplasty is a complex cosmetic procedures to perform, and usually requires the skills of a highly experienced surgeon, such as an appropriately trained ENT surgeon to obtain good results. A key challenge that trained ENT surgeons face when performing rhinoplasty is to produce a result which appears natural whilst also meeting the patient's expectations as closely as possible.

One factor that plays an important part in the success of rhinoplasty is the thickness of a patient’s skin. If an individual’s skin is too thin, it is usually difficult to hide lumps or hollows in the nose. On the other hand, if a patient’s skin is too thick, then some of the modifications made on the inner surface of the nose, might not be visible on the outside.

It is important for patients considering rhinoplasty to discuss their expectations with their ENT surgeon in detail, to get a realistic view of what the nose surgery can achieve. As part of the consultations, the ENT surgeon may use computer imaging technology to illustrate the potential outcome of the nose surgery. However, it is important to keep in mind, that even when used correctly, this tool only approximates the final outcome of rhinoplasty, and any result visualized does not represent the exact surgical outcome.

According to various studies, approximately 90-95 percent of patients who have had nose surgery are pleased with the results. Patients who are not satisfied with the outcome may request a second nose surgery, known as revision rhinoplasty. In some cases, a patient’s dissatisfaction could be related to psychological problems such as body dysmorphic disorder. Such patients should be advised to consult with their GP who can arrange for the right type of support rather than be recommended to proceed with nose surgery. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are patients who are in good general health, psychologically stable and have realistic expectations.
