Functional Rhinoplasty

Are you unable to smell your favourite foods? Do you have trouble breathing properly? Does your partner complain that you snore at night? If yes, consulting with an ENT specialist could be of great help in eliciting the underlying cause of the problem. In some cases, the ENT doctor, after conducting a detail examination, may suggest functional rhinoplasty, for which the skills of an appropriately qualified ENT surgeon would be required.

The Nose

On an average, a person inhales more than 17,000 times in a day. The main functions of the nose include humidifying, filtering, and bringing the temperature of the air to a suitable level, before it reaches the lungs. Air energises and detoxifies the body, and if air flow is hampered in any way, the quality of life of the affected individual usually suffers. Breathing difficulties have a range of causes, some of them being nasal allergies, sinusitis and structural problems.

When is functional rhinoplasty required?

A patient who frequently suffers from a blocked nose, a dry throat, or a loss of smell, which is not responding to treatment, might be suffering from a functional breathing problem. Functional rhinoplasty is a type of nose surgery, which is performed to restore normal breathing, sense of smell, and/or reconstruct a damaged or deformed nose. Some types of functional rhinoplasty are septoplasty, septal surgery and endoscopic sinus surgery.

Some common structural problems, which can be corrected through functional nose surgery include:

• A twisted nasal septum (the partition of cartilage that divides the two nasal passages)

• Enlarged nasal turbinates (small filtering organs inside each nasal passage), which usually occur in patients suffering from severe allergies.

• Collapse of the outer wall of the nose, during inspiration, after heavy exercise.

• Realignment of deformed nasal bones.

• Removal of nasal polyps, which are benign grape-like growths that block nasal passages.

Functional nose surgery is usually covered by most good health insurance plans. Situated in central London, ENT London is a premier ENT clinic which specialises in performing functional nose surgery. The team of ENT surgeons at ENT London are highly experienced in performing rhinoplasty and led by Professor Ram S Dhillon, a leading ENT surgeon with over 30 years of clinical experience.
