Duration of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United Kingdom, with more than 4,000 procedures being performed each year. The popularity of rhinoplasty can mainly be attributed to the excellent results that modern techniques can achieve, and the fact that many people are unhappy with the appearance of their nose.

The term 'rhinoplasty' comes from the Greek words ‘rhinos’ which means nose, and ‘plastikos’ which means to give shape. Rhinoplasty performed to improve the function of the nose like remove birth defects, treat nose injuries and correct breathing problems is known as reconstructive rhinoplasty, whilst nose surgery performed for aesthetic reasons is often referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is generally considered to be a demanding surgical procedure to perform, due to the complex anatomy of the nose. Therefore the dexterity of the surgeon performing the procedure is one of the most important factors which determines its outcome. Hence, it should only be performed by an experienced surgeon, such as an appropriately qualified ENT surgeon, who has undergone specialist training in nose surgery.

How long does the nose surgery take?

Depending on the particular case, rhinoplasty can take anywhere between one to two hours to perform. It is impossible to predict the exact duration of the procedure, however, the surgeon who will be performing the procedure should be able to provide the patient with a general estimate of its likely duration. Generally, simple cases take less time, while complex cases take more time. For example:

• In most cases, surgical procedures to alter the shape of the nasal tip can be completed in around an hour.

• Nose surgery performed to straighten the nasal septum (septoplasty), has a somewhat longer duration, and typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the case.

• Revision nose surgery performed to correct the results of a previous rhinoplasty, could sometimes take up to two hours to perform.
