Rhinoplasty is one of the most common types of cosmetic surgery. A large number of celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Kate Beckinsale and Lady Gaga are said to have undergone the procedure. Also referred to as ‘nose surgery’ or more casually as a ‘nose job’, rhinoplasty can achieve excellent results if performed by the right surgeon, such as an appropriately trained ENT surgeon.
Digital photography is now effectively utilised by many ENT surgeons as part of the consultation process to help patients make an informed decision as to whether they would like to proceed with nose surgery. Photographs are commonly taken by a medical photographer, though they can also be taken by a trained clinician or the ENT surgeon himself.
Below are some common formats of photography used in rhinoplasty:
• 35mm Format: Conventionally, photographs were taken using this format. Though the 35mm format produced excellent images, there was a time delay for development. Also, as these photographs were in a physical format, they needed storage space, which was difficult to arrange, especially in smaller ENT clinics.
• Digital Photography: The development of digital photography in the last decade allowed images to be easily previewed, stored and retrieved. These obvious merits, together with an improvement in image quality led to digital photography being preferred by ENT surgeons for nose surgery.
• Digital Imaging: The arrival of 3D computer software has allowed manipulation of digital photographs, enabling ENT surgeons to plan nose surgery in more detail and assist patients in making informed decisions.
photographs can be used to explain nose surgery to the patient, help the patient make an informed decision, and plan the procedure. It can also be used for intraoperative reference and medico legal documentation. Some of the common views used in rhinoplasty photographs are frontals (front view), laterals (side view), obliques (other angle) and basals (view from below the nose).
