Chronic Atrophic Rhinitis
Rhinitis is a common nose condition, which may require the attention of an ear, nose and throat doctor or an ENT specialist. Some of the primary symptoms of this condition are sino-facial pain, nasal dripping, nasal congestion and inflammation. Sino-facial pain refers to a non specific pain in the region of the nose, upper cheeks, eyes and forehead. Rhinitis is usually caused when the mucous membrane of the nose becomes inflamed due to viruses, bacteria or other irritants. This inflammation results in the production of excessive amounts of mucus, a runny nose and sino facial pain.
Chronic rhinitis, also known as chronic atrophic rhinitis, refers to a chronic inflammation of the nose, which is characterised by atrophy of nasal mucosa. It can be hereditary, and may be caused by deficiency of vitamin A, vitamin D and iron. Chronic rhinitis often begins when a child reaches puberty and is more common in females. However, it is also known to occur in children who are as young as one year.
During chronic atrophic rhinitis, the nasal cavities become larger, and get filled with black or dark green crusts which can affect the patient’s sense of smell. This makes it difficult for the patient to breathe, and can cause sino-facial pain. Patients suffering from this condition often complain of nasal obstruction in spite of having roomy nasal cavities. This is commonly caused either due to obstructions produced by nasal discharges, or because of sensory loss occurring due to atrophy of nasal nerves.
