Rhinoplasty – Surgical Procedure

Rhinoplasty is the technical term for cosmetic surgery performed on the nose. It is also commonly known as a ‘nose job’ or ‘nose surgery’. Rhinoplasty can be performed for aesthetic reasons, as well as to correct medical problems. Some of the common functional reasons for which rhinoplasty may be advised are birth defects, breathing difficulties, and trauma caused by injuries. If performed for aesthetic reasons, rhinoplasty can be used to modify the size of the nose, remove bumps on the bridge, alter the projection of the tip, and much more.

Methods of Performing Nose Surgery

Two common methods of making a surgical incision during rhinoplasty are the open method and the closed method.

•    The open method is usually preferred by most ENT surgeons as it allows them easy access to the cartilage and bone. However, as this method usually leaves visible scarring, it is used only in rare cases, such as to perform complicated types of reconstructive nose surgery.

•    In the closed method, the ENT surgeon makes an incision across the skin between the nostrils, before lifting up the skin to gain access to the cartilage. As incisions are made on the inside of the nose, this method is less likely to leave visible scars, which makes it more suitable for cosmetic rhinoplasty.

Once an ENT surgeon gains access to the nose through either of the above procedures, he will be able to view the cartilage and bone that make up the framework of the nose. Depending on the case, the bone and tissue will be sculpted to create the desired shape and size. In some cases, bone, tissue or cartilage may be transplanted from other parts of the body, to augment the size of the nose. After the ENT surgeon has finished re-sculpting the nose, the incision is stitched up, and a splint is usually applied to help maintain the shape of the nose.

If you wish to know if rhinoplasty is right for you, you should consult with a trained cosmetic surgeon, such as an appropriately qualified ENT surgeon, who will carry out an in-depth medical assessment, before deciding if you are suitable for the nose surgery. Generally, most ENT surgeons do not recommend rhinoplasty for individuals who are below the age of 16 years, to allow the nose to finish growing.
