ENT Doctors For Children

Unlike adults, when young children suffer from ear, nose, and throat problems, they are often unable to clearly vocalise them. This can result in the problem being ignored, until it progresses in severity and requires assessing by an ENT doctor.

An ENT doctor is a doctor who has undergone specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders. ENT doctors are also commonly referred to as ENT specialists, which is the abbreviation for ear, nose and throat specialists.

Some of the common ENT problems that children experience include:

• Blocked noses: This common symptom is usually a result of common cold or flu, and if severe can force children to breathe through the mouth. If it lasts for a long duration, or is persistent, an evaluation by an ENT doctor may be required.

• Runny noses: If this symptom continues to persists, it could be caused by sinusitis or an allergy. In most cases, the child’s General Practitioner is able to successfully diagnose and treat the underlying condition. However if the problem continues to persist, it may require assessment by an ENT specialist.

• Chronic cough: Persistent coughs can have a range of causes such as allergies, sinusitis, chest infections or asthma. In cases where the underlying cause cannot be found, referral to an ear, nose and throat specialists may be required.

• Sinusitis: Is a common condition, which in most cases is treatable with rest and antibiotics if necessary. However, if left unattended, sinusitis in children can progress in severity.

• Sore throat: If the problem occurs frequently, tonsillectomy may be a good option. In such cases, it is important that the child’s condition is assessed by an ENT specialist.

• Ear ache: This problem is commonly caused by either an external ear or middle ear infection. Some external symptoms of the problem which children often display include ear pulling, scratching, crying, irritability and ear drainage. Usually, ENT doctors can successfully treat the problem through a combination of eardrops, antibiotics and ear cleaning.
